Christmas Traditions in Uxbridge
The sub-zero night is crystal clear, the crowd is hushed.

The silence is broken by the soft strains of "Oh Come Oh Come, Emmanuel".
The Living Nativity begins. First, we see the bare foot runner bearing a flaming torch, the village gates open and the town's people appear, setting up their wares in the market, greeting one another, warming their hands by the fire. The soldieres march in, led by the trumpeters; they are here in the small town of Bethlehem because so many have come for the census. The soldiers hassle the townspeople and the crowd to pay their taxes, the horse back soldiers parade back and forth, the town bustles with so many people in the streets.

The soldiers bellow Curfew, forcing everyone to go back into the village behind the gates, the children start running, trying to escape the grasp of the guards, one of the kids escapes, . Finally night falls and all is quiet again, except for the donkey, the horses and sheep adding their voices to the scene. The beggars sleep by the fires. The shepherds bring their flock of sheep close while they sleep.

Joseph leads the donkey carrying expectant Mary into town; stopping exhausted in front of the inn. There is no room, the innkeeper tells them, but they may find a corner in the stable with the animals. Silence; then we hear the cry of a new born babe. A host of angles come to the shepherds, telling the news and pointing to the star, they follow it to the stable, where they find the new born babe wrapped in swaddling clothes.
The entourage of the wise men appear over the hill from the east, garbed in royal attire, bearing gifts, they come to find the babe and join the shepherds bowing before Him in the stable.
The gates swing open and the townspeople stream out wondering to see what is going on, they have been awakened with the news that something wonderful has happened.
They gather round as a full grown Jesus speaks to them, walking amongst the people blessing the children and greeting the crowd. He disappears as the townspeople see the star and gather on bended knee before the new born baby Jesus.
Such is the story portrayed bi annually in the Living Nativity; a cast and crew of over 100 people share the Christmas story in the park in Uxbridge.
28 years ago, our first year in Uxbridge, my daughters and I first participated, lying on a blanket in the snow watching amazed as the story unfolded around us. This year 5 of my grandchildren joined me as we helped to portray the story of the first Christmas.
